Short Story 1: The Finale (3/3)

It’s a late November night and I’ve ended up working late in the office. The contracts need to be finished before the client meeting tomorrow. I have 28 missed calls from Alexa in the past 5 minutes. I’m supposed to take her out to that French restaurant a few blocks north from here but I don’t have the time. I shoot her a text.

“hey babe, won’t be able to take you out for dinner tonight. Work is crazy. Sorry.”

She responds seconds later, “ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!! DO YOU KNOW HOW LONG IT TOOK TO GET THOSE RESERVATIONS??”

My mind is racing. I can’t believe I’m with this woman. She’s driving me mad. She knows how hard I work so that I can be a partner in the firm by next summer. Instead of being supportive, she expects me to entertain all these ridiculous parties and date nights. If I answer now, we are just going to get into an argument. I’ll deal with it when I get home.

Several hours later, I get a call from one of my boys saying that Alexa is out with another man. He filmed a whole video with Alexa being very intimate with the man. So this is what I get for working hard so our future would be secure. I went home, packed my bags and left…

Is that Alexa? She’s looking stunning in that royal blue dress. I’m guessing she’s done with that boy toy of hers and is hawking for the next one. Guessing she hasn’t found “the one” yet. I can’t believe I once fell for her. She got a mindset of a gold digger. Any man marrying her will be making a huge mistake. Thank god I dodged that bullet. Great, she’s walking straight towards me.

Are you kidding me? He has to show up tonight of all nights?! Why do I have the worst luck with men? It’s like karma is out to get me. He moved out last November, I can’t get ahold of him and now he shows up right in my face right when I’m about to leave. He better not ruin this for me. Keith is a snack, looking to be devoured tonight.

 “Hi.” says Jax.

“Hey, how have you been? I haven’t seen you in a long time.” says Alexa.

“I’m great. I became partner a month ago at the firm. You know that was a very important thing to me. I got it 4 months earlier than expected.” says Jax.

“That’s good to hear. So what brings you here?” asks Alexa.

“I’m here to meet up with an old friend. He just moved here a couple months ago and he lives not too far from here. It seems that you’re about to leave.” says Jax.

Alexa stammers, “Yea...I have someone waiting for me. If you would excuse me, I have to go now. Nice seeing you again.”

Keith walks in and sees both Alexa and Jax talking. He walks over and greets Jax, “It’s been so long!! I’m glad you were able to come out.”

Alexa mortified, asks, “Do you know him, Keith?”

Keith says, “Of course, we go back to grade school. I just moved here a couple months ago and have been trying to get ahold of him. Ever since he made partner, I rarely hear from him, but I’m glad he’s able to come out tonight.”

Jax asks Alexa, “Wait, this is who was waiting for you?”

Alexa just stares in disbelief.

Keith asks, “How do you guys know each other?”

Jax says, “This was the woman I was telling you about all this time…how funny that you two know each other.”

Keith says, “I just saw her and we talked a bit. We planned on leaving so she can see the new building I’m in.”

Here she goes again. That’s probably what happened when I was working a lot and she needed the attention. She probably went out and found anyone that would give her that and had a decent income. Once they found out what her attitude really was and decided that they couldn’t put up with it anymore, they wanted to leave.

Jax says, “Well I wouldn’t want to keep you two. I’ll just go to the bar and have a beer.”

Keith asks Alexa, “How about we do this another day? I didn’t expect Jax to show up but now that he is here, I want to have some boys time with him. After all, he hasn’t seen me since I’ve moved here and it’s hard to get ahold of him. You’d understand right?”

Is this guy serious? He’s going to blow me off for his boy? I can’t even believe that this is really happening right now. They really know each other? What are the chances of all the people, he had to know my ex. This has got to be a joke.

Alexa replies sweetly, “Of course, we can do this another time. Enjoy!”

She storms off and then realizes that they never swapped numbers. Once she turns around, the guys are gone.

My own ex cock-blocked me! He stood me up and moved out without saying a word and now he shows up and ruins my night. What is wrong with men? Keith really passed me up to go spend some time with Jax? I’m obviously a better time. Well now I know where he lives, but I don’t know the apartment number. I guess I’d probably run into him again since he lives around here. Keith is mine. They are NOT getting away with this.

At the end of the bar, Jax and Keith find seats.

Jax says, “I can’t believe you were about to walk out with Alexa. What are the odds of running into her here?”

Keith says, “Sorry bro, had no idea she was your ex. She was hot and I just walked up to her. I should have been suspicious when she asked to come back to my place. I wouldn’t say we had the best conversation, I don’t even know much about her but she seemed eager to come back with me.”

“Yeah, she’s bad news. I don’t even want to know how many times she cheated on me when I’m gone for work. She stressed me out so much,” Jax says. “Women like her are bad news. I recommend staying away from her. Nothing good comes out of it. She will drain you emotionally and she will just blow through your money. She’s not looking for real love. She just wants to make sure that you will be able to take care of her financially and shower her with attention. If you can’t do that? Best believe, she will seek it from another man.”

“I’ll keep my distance from her. She was yours at one point. I don’t do hand me downs.” Keith laughs, “I have a better eye for women like her anyway. I’ve come across too many of them back home. But enough about her, what’s new with you?”

Jax says, “Well, you know I’ve been named partner in my firm. The family is doing well. I started seeing this girl. I met her playing golf with one of my clients. She’s an oral surgeon. With our busy schedules, it’s hard to see each other, but when we do, it’s always a great time. She never pressures me for anything and we just enjoy each other’s company.”

Keith says, “That’s great to hear. Honestly you deserved better than Alexa. The times you called me late at night stressed out trying to deal with her, you don’t need all that. She wasn’t doing anything good for you. I could understand if she was supportive with your career and being your emotional support but she just seemed to always nag you. She didn’t understand that your career is demanding with high stress.”

“Don’t remind me, so glad the nightmare was over. But enough with me, what about you? Looks like you got a great role. It was perfect timing to relocate here. They weren’t doing enough for you back home. You were outdoing your job and underpaid.” Jax says, “What are your plans in the next couple years here?”

Keith says, “I love it here. The job is good, with great people. The patients are a bit more feisty being that it is a big city but I’m getting used to it. I have no idea what my plans are, I guess its wherever my job takes me. Women aren’t really my thing you know? I haven’t dated in over 3 years. I never felt the need to be rushed into marriage and I haven’t met a great woman that has the wow factor. They just seem to flock to me. Women try too hard to impress me. I never felt like a woman wanted to really get to know me without judging what my job is and how much I make. There is more about me than just my job title.”

Jax says, “Yea, I completely follow you with that. Quality women nowadays are harder to find. I find it hilarious that women seek out other women for advice. They call us dumb and yet they usually end up screwing themselves over. There comes a point where you hit a timeframe and you just end up settling for someone that meets some of your requirements instead of being patient and finding the right one.”

Keith says, “Yea, I know you get the pressure from your family but luckily I don’t have to deal with that. I can be alone and enjoy myself instead of having to tolerate someone everyday just so I don’t feel lonely. That just sounds miserable.”

“You’re lucky that your family don’t care. It so important for the family that I find a good girl that comes from a wealthy background. They want grandkids. I never understood why it was my duty to owe them kids. I thought it was always my choice,” Jax says. “But I think we should head out, it’s getting late and I need to be in the office early tomorrow. Let’s meet up on the weekday, I should have some free time for dinner sometime this week.”

“Alright, it was good seeing you,” Keith says. “For the record, I never took down Alexa’s number so you won’t have to worry. I wasn’t interested in sleeping with her but it was interesting to see how far some women go to try and get you to fall for them.”

Jax says, “Yeah just be careful, you might catch something. Nowadays, all sorts of women are capable of anything. Later.”

I wonder why women act the way they do? It isn’t as if they are incapable of doing the same things we are doing. Women are so caught up with this façade of putting what they want to be out there instead of who they really are. It’s so tasteless. If women were even 10% more aware of the things they are doing and noticed what is turning the good men off, I think they would have a better chance of finding a good man. Bad men give good men a bad name but ideally, it all stems from the women. Boys learn from their fathers how to treat a lady right but the mother is their woman role model. If a woman isn’t anything close to how their mom treated them, why would any man want to go after a woman? Moms will usually always treat their kids well, so unless a woman can match what the mother has done, most of the time, they don’t stand a chance. I’ve already given too much thought to this, I should get myself home. This will be for another day.
