Short Story 1: Trouble In Paradise (2/3)

I spotted her across the room. Without fail, she is here by 10 p.m. every Saturday night. She must frequent this lounge as one of her routes. Women like her amuse me. They come dressed their best to seek out their next prey. Since Mystique have opened 4 months ago, she has always left with another man. I am so glad Tassia is not like her or I would need to give her a scolding.

Brett creeps up to his friend and surprises him. “Chad!”

Startled, “Hey! You’re finally here on time for once. I didn’t expect you to be here so soon. I’m surprised your girl let you come out.”

“Oh yeah! Emmy had to meet up with her sister tonight,” Brett says. “I see you’re taking notice of that girl again. She must have caught your eye somehow.”

“Sometimes, I worry that Tassia might become like her when she gets older.” Chad says. “She doesn’t seem to look that much older than Tassia though. I’m proud of her and I definitely don’t want her to be influenced by that girl.” Or even hang around her, Chad thinks to himself.

“Tassia is a smart girl. She won’t waste her time trying to go out all the time. She built this place herself. You should be proud of her. I doubt that she seeks out the same type of men that most women want,” Brett says. “Tassia thinks that she deserves a lot better than just men spoiling her with money. She is already doing very well herself. She can take care of herself. Don’t worry!”

“Hopefully you are right. Without our parents around, it’s been hard.” Chad says. “Being the older brother, I always have to worry about her. I can’t imagine that she worked so hard to create all this and have it ruined by some boy. Being able to say I am also an investor in my sister’s lounge while running my own tech company, we definitely came a long way.”

“I know, I know. We’ve been best friends since we were 10. You’re practically my brother so of course I worry for Tassia. Thankfully Emmy isn’t anything like these women we see every day. She is such a rarity.”

“Speaking of Emmy, when are you going to pop the question? You know she is a gem. She’s gorgeous and speaks three different languages. In 3 years, she will become a partner in her firm. She’s crazy about you. But not only that, she cooks and cleans!” says Chad.

“Honestly, I’m nervous,” Brett admits. “I’ve been looking at engagement rings but I haven’t found anything that screams, this is it! She definitely deserves the best.”

“Have you considered possibly looking for one that you can create yourself? You can work with a jeweler to get exactly what you are looking for.” Chad stated.

“Nah, but that sounds like a good idea. I was just hoping I could just find something that I like instead of personalizing it. That takes a lot of time and it might delay the proposal date,” Brett says. ”But hey, let’s get out of here. I could really use some dinner. Emmy left early so she didn’t have time to make dinner for both of us.”

“Alright, let’s go down the street for some steak.” Says Chad.

I notice her walking towards the bar with a man in his early 30s. Chad smirks. Here we go again. She will chat him up. He will pay for exactly 2 drinks. She will start out with the French 75 cocktail. She will end with the smoky martini. She will probably find out where he lives and what he does and from there, she deducts whether he is worth her time. Usually she leaves with a man. She doesn’t seem to have money issues. She looks like she could be in consulting or some sort of business. I wonder why she would rather waste her time looking for a man instead of enjoying herself and doing what she loves. Women are confusing.

Keith and Alexa reach the bar.

“What would you like to have?” asks Keith.

“French 75 cocktail please.” says Alexa.

“Could I get a French 75 cocktail and whiskey on the rocks?” Keith asks the bartender.

“Coming right up, it will be $26.” says the bartender.

“Do you mind keeping a tab open?” asks Keith.

“No problem, here you go.” says the bartender while handing over the drinks.

“Thanks. So what do you do?” asks Alexa.

“I am a doctor. I specialize in cardiology. What do you do?” says Keith.

“Oh me? I just manage a couple people in this financial company,” Alexa says. “Your job sounds a lot cooler. Do you live around the area?” She finishes her drink and orders a smoky martini.

“Yeah, I actually live about 5 minutes away from here in that new high rise. I live by myself. It’s such a great building with a lot of amenities.” says Keith as the bartender hands Alexa another drink.

“I’d love to see your place, I pass that building on the way to work all the time. I don’t live far from here either but your place sounds a lot more fun,” Alexa says. “How about we go take a walk for some fresh air and then maybe you could show me your place? I was considering moving into that building after my lease ends.” says Alexa.

This might be too easy. He definitely seems interested. I need to scout what else he has going on. I have to get on his good graces. I’ve spent less time tonight looking for someone than I’ve in the past month. He must not come here often if he hasn’t seen me around before meaning his friends probably wouldn’t know me. I might have an in. No way can he resist me in this royal blue dress. I look hot. Hopefully we can finish up tonight and I wake up the next morning in his bed.

“Uh, I guess so...” stammers Keith.

“Okay great, I’m going to use the restroom and you can close out the tab. I’ll meet you in the front in 5 minutes.” Alexa states.

“Alright. Bartender, do you mind closing out my tab?” asked Keith.

Alexa walk towards the restroom to freshen up her makeup. She ends up bumping into one of her longtime friend.

“Hey Renee, haven’t seen you in a while!” Alexa says excitedly.

“Hey girl, yea, been busy. Let me guess, you up to no good again?” Renee laughs.

“You know it, but I have to go. I need to freshen up. This doctor is waiting for me in the front. Nice seeing you! We’ll do brunch soon!” Alexa says while scurrying away.

“This girl, when is she ever going to learn. Men will come when you aren’t chasing them.”

Alexa finishes touching up her makeup. She makes way to the front and spots Keith waving at her. She smiles.

This is a whole new level of exciting. It isn’t even midnight yet and I get to leave with a man. We should probably stop by the liquor store for some wine, he probably isn’t drunk yet. I need to make sure we sleep together tonight. No way am I letting him get away.

As she nears the front door to meet Keith, her ex approaches..
